Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA)

The City of Boston is extending the time period for employees to take any remaining unused leave for which they are eligible under the City of Boston policies on Families First Coronavirus Response Act (for Employees Not Designated as Health Care Providers or Emergency Responders) and the Coronavirus Supplemental Paid Sick Leave for Health Care Providers and Emergency Responders (the “Policies”) until March 31, 2021.  However, please be advised that the City reserves the right to suspend the Policies and benefits provided by the Policies before March 31, 2021 if there is any new state and/or federal legislation related to COVID leave.  The City is not creating a new leave benefit and is not granting any additional paid leave benefits under the Policies; rather, the City is allowing employees to roll over any remaining unused leave for which they are eligible under the existing Policies. Employees can take any such leave until further notice but no later than March 31, 2021.

As many of you may be aware, the Policies were due to expire at the end of 2020 as federal legislation provided the paid leave benefits under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act expire on December 31, 2020.  However, the City elected to extend the benefits as it recognizes employees may still need to be absent from work due to COVID related reasons.

Employees who have exhausted their leave under the Policies may be entitled to other forms of paid and/or unpaid leave pursuant to other City policies.  Attached you will find the Policies, a FAQ document about the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (for Employees Not Designated as Health Care Providers or Emergency Responders) policy, and a seperate FAQ document about the Coronavirus Supplemental Paid Sick Leave for Health Care Providers and Emergency Responders policy.  Please contact your personnel officer or the Office of Human Resources at [email protected] in the event you require leave for a COVID related reason, if you have any questions about COVID leave or your designation as a Health Care Provider or Emergency Responder.

As a reminder, all employees must abide by all City policies, including but not limited to the temporarily modified City of Boston Attendance Policy which includes the Return to Work.
